If I have learned anything from being at Berkeley, it’s that Los Angeles is the best city to be around. I’ve taken it upon myself to spent this Winter Break being my own Andrew Zimmerman and enjoying all the odd/unique foods of LA. So these next couple of weeks, my tumblr will be dedicated to logging the food I go eat. Enjoyz!
Food #1: Orochon Ramen
Now, Orochon Ramen doesn’t serve particularly odd food per se, it’s more about the “Special Number 2 Challenge” that makes it noteworthy. If you can finish the ramen in 30 minutes, you get to have your picture up on the Orochon Wall of Bravery. (Actually, a lot of people have managed to accomplish it, there are three or four albums full. I’m guessing these people are demons though.)

Notice it says, “Eat at Your Own Risk!!!” (Count it, THREE exclamation marks)
Orochon ranks their ramen by spiciness, 7 being the least spiciest. First, you choose from three types of broth: miso, soy sauce, or salt, then the ranking of spiciness (1-7), and finally, any extra toppings you want: egg, pork slice, leeks, etc. Now, Jason, Andrew, and I have been here twice already to watch Andrew fail the challenge, but this time Andrew insisted he could do it. Andrew’s words were, “I can do it this time guys. I’m ready.” Third times the charm. Jason and I are noobs and got #4 Salt and #5 Soy Sauce (Which were delicious)

Noob ramen FTW
THEN,there’s Andrew’s Special Number Two. The mother of all evils, the blood of Satan, the broth of Hell.

Notice Andrew’s QQ face, the redness of the broth, and the dozens of jalepeno slices.
From the lessons Andrew has learned from this challenge, the noodles, beef slices, and vegetables inside are tolerable and probably the best part of the meal. It’s the broth that will kill you. There’s so much of it, it’s extremely hot, and it’s beyond spicy. In fact, they add so much chili powder to it that the broth is a much thicker texture than water.

There’s so much chili powder that the broth does not even dissolve all of it. (LOL chem kids! Solubility ftw) That’s all powder on that spoon!
Overall, it was a great $8 meal on a cold day. Thanks Andrew for paying for everyone’s meals. Even thinking about when I tried some of Andrew’s broth makes me cringe.
Oh, and yeah, he failed again. -_-
